Visit Bristol and mention the name Mensah, there's a damn good chance that someone's going to know the man we're talking about. Having become involved in the Bristol music scene at an early age, there's no surprise that he epitomizes the great things associated with the city's music – positive, progressive and different.
With aspirations of never wanting to make the same tune twice or wanting to be typecast into one genre, Mensah looks set to push whatever sound he decides to take forward. Sometimes dubstep, sometimes purple, sometimes rave – the idea is to evolve his sound naturally. And with his debut EP Untitled Future Funk getting dropped on Hench, he is definitely a name to earmark for achieving big things in the future...
Subscape - Just Because
What can I say other than WOW! The intro is drum & bass magic but the drop is so so different. Simple beats with precision melody and arpeggiated bass is enough to keep you interested throughout. Electro meets dubstep but with a fun and playful feel.
Superisk - Find Your Way
This track has just been signed to Punch Drunk and is due for release in the autumn but I have had this in my sets for nearly a year now. Again simple is best with a ragga style beat and a wonky grime feel. Watch out for the synths because they will get you! I have just finished doing a remix of this one so look out for that as well.
Redlight - Robot Chopsticks
My boy Redlight leading the way with his pioneering of new sounds and styles and this is no exception. This one has been picked up by Chase & Status for MTA records and it's a dancefloor smasher that gets a good reaction everywhere I play it. Crazy synths and skippy, clap happy beats with a little feel of the east involved to give it a unique character and flavour.
L-Wiz - Fotbojan
Some real swagga boggie biz on this track. Fresh dub from the Swedish producers that I play every set. Girls and guys go crazy when I play it but in a different way to normal. I suggest you close your eyes for this one!!
The Others & Distinction - Violet
This is what the kids need... a lesson in BASS! Intricate beats with a HEAVY sub and subtle gritty bass. Glistening synths and melodies float in and out over the top of it all and to me is pure bliss. It's a real good tune for mixing because of it's openness and catchy little synth riffs.
Die & Interface ft William Cartwright - Bright Lights
Absolute must have!! The intro is some of the most soulful music I have heard come from the world of drum & bass for a very long time and Will lays down a stunning vocal that sets the tone for the track. Die & Interface come up with the drum & bass vibes that make this a HUGE track. There is a full vocal mix (The Rollers Mix) which I prefer to listen to but it's the Rockers Mix that I have been playing out in the clubs to destroy the dancefloor.
The Untitled Future Funk EP, Mensah's debut EP on Jakes' Hench Recordings, touches on both the atmospheric and downright funky sides of dubstep. Already getting rinsed by the likes of Skream, Plastician, Starkey, Joker and Mistajam, you can now get hold of the EP at all good record stores, alongside www.dstyle.co.uk
