The winner of our unsigned track competition for July 2012 was Project Blubook with Do It Again, so we spoke to the producer behind the project to find out more.
Please introduce yourself...
I'm Jared Bryant, the owner of Severn Valley Studios and the producer for Project Blubook.
How would you describe your approach to making music and what are your genres of choice?
As with most of my productions, the first priority is to create a solid rhythm track, to program beats and layer samples, creating unique drum sounds.
Once I'm happy, I will arrange the beats into a recognisable pattern (intro, chorus, verse & middle 8, ending, etc.), so the template of the track is down. With the template in place, I can then work on chords. Being a pianist naturally, I will experiment with various piano chords, until something 'catchy' sticks.
Then, I will generally start designing bass and synth sounds, mostly using my Access Virus TI Snow, taking care to sync my LFOs with the right time signatures. When all the music is in place, I will then often hand it over to my professional vocalists, (and hope they like the track too), and with 'Do It Again', I had no doubt that Martin Orchard would come up with the goods, as he had already done, on the first 'Project Blubook' album 'Volume One'.
Personally, I take great pride in being able to identify and enjoy good music from pretty much all genres. I was brought up on 60s West Coast, 70s Alternative Rock, 80s Pop & Indie & 90s Dance Music.
There is more depth to your musical background besides making your own productions. Talk us through your other projects.
As well as performing every week with my covers band The Underdogs, I also produce Grimestep tracks for Valley Dan Gang and Atmospheric House tracks for Revamp Recordings.
What is your studio set up like?
My studio and its equipment is my pride and joy, having spent decades collecting & buying vintage amps, instruments, mics, samples & plugins. At Severn Valley Studios we record through Pro Tools and Cubase, but I must say, when it comes to making electronic music, Cubase has always been my preferred choice (I still own two Atari ST's, with Cubase on!).
As well as all the studio work, have you delved in to the world of DJing?
Back in the 90's, I regularly DJ'd up and down the country, and actually ran many nights/residencies, mostly with Drum & Bass and Trip Hop sets in Bham, Manchester, Bristol, London & Wolverhampton.
Where can we go to keep updated with your future work?
Most of my music productions can be found on SoundCloud or Facebook but, to keep up to date with Project Blubook, you can follow us here.
