Hudson Mohawke Butter LP Review

Hudson Mohawke drops his debut LP on October 12th after an eternity of plugging and touring. A synthy, broken flow, the album contains the usual elements of oily hip-hop melodies a la Paul White, sharply over-tweaked vocals and rumbly, pixelized bass in vein of label-mate Flying Lotus. But at times it's just too off the wall - by trying to emulate his live shows, Hudson may have lost his way.

There are daring sounds on this album, from the twisted flute samples and bouncing bass on FUSE, to 'ZooOO00Oom's terrifyingly dark, Modeselektor-like distorted dubstep-techno hybrid - there's promise here, if only for major fans. 18 tracks of annoyingly sped up vocals, drums so randomised Venetian Snares would cower in fear and unbelievably bizarre sounds and arrangements, this might be too much futurism for the humans to handle just yet. However, there are a few a gems inside too.
