Freaky Flow

Freaky Flow made his name as DJ / producer in the 90s Toronto drum & bass scene. His DJ sets are notable for his scratching and cutting and he quickly became one of the most popular DJs in North America. He's released many popular mix CDs over the years and his latest, 'The Furious Factor', is his first in five years. Here he tells us all about it...

How did this mix come about?
The owners of Furious Records, one of Canada's longest-running drum and bass labels, approached me with the idea of mixing a retrospective album of their greatest hits, so to speak. I loved the idea, we took it to Moist Music in New York, and the rest is history.

Tell us more about it...
The new mix, 'The Furious Factor', is basically a fusion of everything Freaky Flow and everything Furious. Listeners get my mixing and scratching flavour, but they also get the music that has defined the Furious Records label for the last decade or so.

How involved were you in choosing the tracks?

Furious Records gave me their entire catalogue of a few hundred tracks, and said 'pick what you like', and so I did.

You've done so many mixes in your career, what makes this one different?
This mix is newer than all the other ones! Just kidding, of course. Well, aside from the fact that this is the first mix I've ever done with music exclusively from one label, I like to think that I'm always improving, as a DJ. In 2009, I hope I'm better than I was in 2008, and I think this mix offers even more refined mixing and scratching. It was certainly fun to mix!

What's your all time favourite DJ mix that you own?
That's a really tough question, but one mix that I keep going back to is the LTJ Bukem Mixmag CD from the early nineties. I've probably heard that about a hundred times, but I never get sick of it.

What else have you been working on recently?
Well, I just recently moved from Toronto to Los Angeles, so I've mostly been settling in here. It's a time-consuming process! But I think I'm almost nested now.

What tracks, producers and labels are you feeling at the moment?
Such a tough question! There's so much good music out there, but I'm really digging some of the newest DJ Fresh stuff, and Calibre is almost always a hit with me; as far as labels go, I'm consistently into tunes on Shogun, Technique and Viper.
