 839

Following the release of their critically acclaimed, experimental drum & bass album 839, Justice & Metro have now been given the remix treatment on Modern Urban Jazz. Featuring new and up & coming artists as well as established producers and a few old school surprises to boot, we caught up with Tony Justice to find out more...

How long have you been working on these tracks?

The project has been the culmination of a year's work. Because we had the whole of the original LP of 12 tracks remixed, we then had artists who wanted to do the same track and ended up with 16 in total. When you are dealing with that many tracks and personalities, it takes a lot of logistics and juggling to say the least. Although Scott Metro or myself have not worked on any of these tracks as such, it has taken a lot of behind the scenes work, organizing and liaising across all the artist to make sure we would come up with a good varied, eclectic bunch of remixes, which I think we have.

Tell us about which type of sound you were trying to achieve?

When we thought about the whole idea and concept of the LP, we knew we didn’t want to just get a load of bog-standard remixes or remixers. We wanted different and varied styles and genres, we wanted the artist who we would involve to push the boundaries and not play safe. It also wasn’t about going to the usual 'go to guys' for remixes, we wanted to bring through some lesser known, some of the artists we work with and a few guys who have legendary status who wanted to try some different approaches. The MJAZZ sound is about experimenting, it’s about bringing some futuristic nostalgia, harking back to where the label started but bringing it forward to now.

Tell us about which type of sound you were trying to achieve?

We wanted a broad spectrum, we wanted to allow the artists free rein in how they chose to tackle the track they had be given or chosen. MJAZZ is about experimenting within drum & bass, and with the other genres or styles we are interested in or influenced by. We wanted to encapsulate some deep house, glitchy, hip-hop, techno and jazz because that it what feeds into our sound as a label and as artists also. The original LP was pretty experimental, so we wanted the remixers to embrace that spirit also and not feel that had to churn out something run of the mill.

Tell us more about the latest release...

After the critical acclaim of their highly cinematic and experimental LP ‘839’, Justice and Metro enlisted the help of peers, young bloods and legends alike to put an alternative spin on things. With a variety of styles, tempos, and genres, the final result is an eclectic mixture of flavours and influences. Remixers include- Lo: Tek, Subminimal, Dominic Ridgway, PFM, 2nd City Blue, Jason Os, Cuelock, 2 Sucka DJ’s V 42Floor, Zoon Van Snook, Diamond Eye, Deep Blue, Fade, Caps Lock and Momentum.

Alongside the 16 track digital release there will be a 12-inch vinyl sampler featuring nostalgic futurism from the one and only PFM who takes control of Touch Feel. On the flip New York’s Jason Os, takes charge and delivers an epic, subtle, cinematic bass melody driven killer.

What is your target audience?

Our target audience is the leftfield drum and bass audience, or those with an appreciation of the deeper side of electronic music. We have tried to capture this via this release and think there is something for everyone from the nostalgic drum & bass head, to the glitchy hip hop fan, to the acid jazz head or the techno/deep house aficionados alike. We also try to give the physical product a hand finished collectors appeal, and this will come in the form of the hand sprayed 12-inch featuring PFM and Jason Os.

Do you have any more details about forthcoming releases/appearances?

We have an upcoming digital bonanza, where we will digitally release the Modernists 1 & 2, Diamond Eyes' Moments in life and the Icons Emotions with Intellect LP, all of which have never been released digitally. Metro and myself are working on new material and we will have the next instalment of the Modernists series as well loads more boutique, hand finished collectors editions.
