Tyke

Drum & bass producer Tyke has The Music Makers EP coming on Twisted Individual's Grid Recordings, we caught up with him to find out more about it...

Please introduce yourself...
The name is Tyke, 26-years-old, not for long though! I've been producing since I reached puberty, so only a couple of months. I hail from North London where the grass is blue, the sky is green and the buildings are grey.

How would you describe your approach to making music?
I tend to take an older approach to making music. I first start on an old Akai and try find a sample that I can work with and which influences me to build something around. Sometimes the sample could even be a bass line that I have resampled over and over again and other times I start from the end of the track and work back.

When I go in the studio, I tend to throw all rules out the window and any plans I had to start with. I find to truly build a track from the heart you have to listen to it at that present time, which takes some getting used to. I mean, you could be looking to build a liquid track but your heart and spirit are in no mood for candle lit dinners so you end up constructing something really dirty.

Talk us through the tracks on your forthcoming EP on Grid... what did you have in mind when you made them?
Well, most of them I had probably just watched some BBW just beforehand to get me in the mood and release any excess stress, but bar that...

I had been watching a lot of classic Charles Bronson films, hence The Giggler sample, Desire Of The Damned and World Of Fantasy also had some snippets of a Charles Bronson film here and there.

All jokes aside though, it was a really fun EP to create, really found myself whilst making it. I called it The Music Makers after the track which is really special to me.

How did you hook up with Grid in the first place?
I hooked up via Northern Lights, who are close friends of mine. I sent over a few tracks and it went from there basically.

What else have you been working on recently?
I have been working on a few projects, including some tasty collabs with Canada's NC17. I've been trying to take my style to a place where it's never been before, just for my own sanity, and it has been very rewarding. So watch out for some future releases!

Got any other releases in the pipeline we should look out for?
No immediate releases finalised but there are some tracks to watch out for like Scorpio, Sells Like Roses, Werewolves On Wheels and Immortal Formula.

Anything else you want to tell us about?
Big ups to Twisted Individual, Gareth @ Grid, DJ Escape, Hazard, Prestige, Andy C, Scott @ Ram, Steppa, DJ Kane, Crissy Criss, Grooverider, Bailey and many more, you know who you are!
