Birmingham based producer Harvest has been busy making a name for himself with his energetic style of drum & bass. With support from some of the most established DJs in the industry and planned collaborations with Playaz's Jaydan, we caught up with DJ Harvest to find out more.
Tell us a little about yourself...
Well, my name is Pete Styles and I produce drum & bass under the name Harvest. I've been producing since about 2008.
How did you get into music production?
I've always been making music but to start with I was playing in various bands. I started listening to drum & bass around the same time my last band I was in split up, so I decided to learn how to produce and make some music on my own for while.
How would you describe your style and production?
I guess my sound could be describe as jungle with a mix of more modern sounds. However I try to be as diverse as I can in the studio so I have a load of styles that I produce and play out.
What's your set-up like and what equipment do you use?
I'm using Logic on a Mac in the studio, and some of my old guitar effects units and a valve amp that I have from playing in bands.
What has been your biggest accomplishment in your career so far?
For me I think Militant was my biggest tune, the support it had from all the A-list DJs was more than I could imagine. It was also selected by Andy C for Nightlife 5 although it didn't make the final CD.
With so many producers trying to break into the drum & bass industry, what do you think makes you and your music stand out from the crowd?
When I'm in the studio I'm really conscious of making everything sound as live and organic as possible but still hard hitting for the clubs. I think this gives my tunes a certain style and groove, not sure if it makes my tunes unique, but it definitely gives them their own style.
What are your plans for the future?
I have a fair few bookings over the summer planned and I'll playing outside of the UK for the first time in Antwerp, St Petersburg and Moscow. In terms of releases, there's a 12" on Colab records on promo anytime now, Militant VIP on Apex with a remix of Spies on the flip from Bladerunner and I have another two releases on Smokin Riddims scheduled along with an EP from the camp that will feature another two of my tunes. I'm also working on a collaboration with Jaydan. So overall it's a pretty busy year ahead.
Anything else you would like us to know?
Big up for all the support I've been getting so far and follow me on Twitter.
