Jungle Box from Australia are promoting a massive drum & bass festival called Paradise In Bali on November 14th & 15th. To say the location for the event is spectacular is a massive understatement and the line-up isn't too shabby either. Expect to see the likes of international talent like Netsky, Matrix & Futurebound, Makoto, Bungle, Krust & Die, Utah Jazz and Amit alongside local talent like the Javabass Crew and DJ Low from Malaysia's Loops Collective. We spoke to DJ Low to find out more about him and the drum & bass scene in Malaysia...

Please introduce yourself...
My name is DJ Low and I'm based in KL, Malaysia. I formed Loops Collective in the late 90s by jamming in the studio with a few mates before stepping into local clubs and bars. I founded Take Off Records in 2007 and so far we've released three compilations CDs. Currently, the label is compiling dnb, breaks, urban tracks for new releases and audio work.

Do you have any residencies or promote your own night?
I promote a dnb night once or twice a month in KL bars or clubs. It's always a small scene. Every Friday, KL DnB Internet Radio "BRING IT ON" can be listened at www.krisisdnb.com. Since Loops Collective is celebrating its eleventh anniversary this year we're pushing more now.

What's the best gig you played in the last six months?
I played at Recycle at ICON in Berlin. The night featured Spectrasoul and MC Deeizm and I played three hours until 7am. It was an awesome crowd! I also played at SLAP in Vienna presented by Disaszt and Camo & Krooked. The night featured Lomax and guest MC Jenna G. Madness! It's another party that I met sun when I came out from the club.

What are the top three tracks in your record box right now?
It would be Time2Burn remix (4ngel Recordings), Dark Times (Bulletproof & Mindscape & Tiki) and my track, Beliefs.

Have you got into production yet?
Definitely! After many years of promoting the DJs and nights I finally have spare time to write some tunes. Take Off Records first release was EXTENDED, a Loops Collective compilation CD in 2007 consisting of tracks from Utah Jazz, SUV, Makoto and Asian DJs. Following that we released compilation CDs for Malaysia's prestigious dance music Choons Awards in 2009 and 2010 . Now I'm working on a few tracks and hoping they will be completed before Paradise In Bali.

What's the d&b scene like in Malaysia?
It's always an underground scene. There is no proper dnb radio show and most of the bars and clubs play mainstream top 40 radio hits. It's all about us, funding ourself and only dreaming of sponsorship. Thank god some local magazines like KLUE, JUNK, JUICE are supportive of the d&b scene in Malaysia. We always face club owners or managers without any musical background. Although we pack venues and have good bar sales some of the owners just dislike d&b. But it's ok, we'll keep it going until we start up our own bar. Compare from the early days, there are lot more new dnb producers in KL releasing tunes.

How did you come to be on the line-up for Paradise In Bali?
In 2009 I met Alex from Jungle Box where he and Q-Bik hooked me up a gig with A-Sides. Earlier this year Alex came to meet me when I spun in Perth and discussed Paradise In Bali. I consider Paradise In Bali to be one of the biggest dnb festivals in Asia.  Big up to Jungle Box and Javabass for making this happen!
