Nilow from Berlin based dubstep / drum & bass label BF Recordings tells us all about his label...
Who is involved with running BF Recordings?
BF Recordings has two heads, DJ Barry T and myself. I'm more into dubstep and Barry T is more into d&b.
When did your label begin & why was it set up?
It all started in March 2009 when I took part in a competition to remix Don Goliath's Mrs. U. Although my entry didn't win, I got permission to release my remix for free and so we decided to create our own label. We had a monthly party in Berlin called BassFieber and this is how BF Recordings was born.
Since everyone is talking about d&b being dead we thought it would be a good idea to combine it with dubstep. It helps both genres - people loving dubstep get in touch with d&b and vice versa. In the beginning we released free mp3s only and will continue to do so regularly.
Can you tell us more about your key artists?
Shem is an up-and-coming DJ / producer from Poland, when we first heard his productions we couldn't believe that he wasn't signed. He makes neurofunk d&b, dubstep, electro tracks, hip hop, trip hop, house and even jazz and downtempo. I make tunes that range from the dark and heavy right through to the lighter, melodic, atmospheric style.
How would you describe your label's sound?
Our dubstep is innovative, filthy, heavy, forward stepping with a mix of melodies and deepness. The tracks tell their own stories, which is very important to us. The drum & bass goes from neurofunk over to techno-DNB and sits somewhere in the middle of those genres you could call neurotech.
What's the ethos behind the label?
Our aim is to create a colourful mix by bringing together two great styles in electronic music and to feature up-and-coming artists. Nowadays there are so many people producing really good tracks and we feel the need to show there's more behind d&b and dubstep than just the 'big fishes in the biz'. So BF can be a stepping stone for our artists and help them to gain more popularity, which would be a win-win-win-situation for all.
What do you have coming out soon?
A free sampler called Sofa Sessions Vol.1 has just come out. It features eleven tracks ranging from trip hop over hip hop to dubby dubstep and jungle / liquid d&b and the tunes are from artists you wouldn't expect to produce such styles. Also, there will be a techno-d&b EP with four tracks from several up-and-coming producers and Ogonek (who will release an EP by himself on BF after this) from the HMSU-Crew in Bulgaria. Another sampler - this time strictly dubstep - will come this summer. And we are working on our first vinyl release at the moment, but as we want something special for this it may take a few months until the release.
Anything else you want to tell us about?
We want to say a big THANK YOU and BIG UP to everyone who supported us with free releases and helped us become what we are now. Please visit our site for our podcasts, mixes and free releases to download. Greetings to all the people that helped us out and kisses to our mums ;)
