Black Sun Empire

The first We Fear Silence party of 2012 is on Saturday January 21st at Cable in London and features Black Sun Empire's Blackout event. Known and loved for their high-octane techno-infused D&B and dubstep, Black Sun Empire are a trio not to be missed. We spoke to Micha from Black Sun Empire to find out what's in store for them this year.

You're bringing your Blackout event to London for the first time on January 21st, please can you tell us what Blackout is all about and what people can expect on the night...
We started organising Blackout at Tivoli in Utrecht nine years ago because we wanted to show our home town what we love about the music we make and what was going on in that genre. We always try to have a diverse line-up, a mix between all the sub-genres drum & bass has to offer. However, we've focused more on the sound we produce for the first show in London, as we think it might be a bit underrepresented in the UK scene.

Is this the start of regular Blackout events with We Fear Silence at Cable?
That would be great.

Tell us all about your next night in Utrecht...
The next Blackout in Utrecht will be on February 3rd with S.P.Y, Klute, ourselves and some local talent.

You're also expanding Blackout throughout Europe in 2012, tell us more about the other cities you'll be going to and what you have planned.
We did a big rave edition in Brussels last year with Suburban Soundz and that will happen again this year. Besides that Berlin, Brighton, Budapest and Canadian promoters are showing interest. It's all in the early stages but things are exciting.

Why do you think Blackout has been such a success?
I think it has something to do with the diversity of the line-ups and music. We dare to give new up-and-coming DJs a chance and put Counterstrike, Marcus Intalex and Nero on the same bill.

You recently remixed a Noisia track called Thursday, what can you tell us about that?
It will be coming out on their re-release of Split the Atom on Mau5trap, the home of Deadmau5. It will include more remixes of the original album and it's nice to be part of a fellow Dutch project.

What's coming on your BSE label in the next few months?
There will be a EP featuring remixes by Mindscape, Audio, Jade and Telekinesis of tracks from our last Lights & Wires album that will act as the sampler for our coming album. Besides that there will be a new release on Obsessions with N.Phect – Lotus flipped with Telekinesis – Machines.

You've started work on your fifth album, what can you tell us about it?
It will include collaborations with Noisia, Audio, State of Mind, MC Bless, Rido and hopefully Foreign Beggars, The Upbeats and Nymfo. Production is going really well, but we can't say anything more than that, more news soon!
