When did you start Waxworks?
We started Waxworks about five years by us at our SU bar at Kingston University. At the time there was no drum & bass in the local area whatsoever and we were all budding DJs. So we used to drop tunes every Thursday night and made quite a party out of it, gaining a solid reputation amongst the student masses.
Where and when do your events take place?
As mentioned, Waxworks nights started off at Kingston SU, however, Bacchus, a local club, were tipped off about the good things we were doing there and invited us to take our night there on a bi-weekly basis. This is where we have been for the last three years with highlights including guest sets from G-Dub, Spectrasoul, Nicky Blackmarket and Utah Jazz. Now we are bringing the essence of Waxworks to Hidden, starting a bi-monthly residency on Friday May 14th called Waxworks: Movement Music.
What are the names of the residents?
Undefined (aka Steve Souster), DJ Millz (aka Spectrum), Sparks + MCs Format and Robson.
What's the night all about?
Our strap line is 'Movement Music' which will mean different things to different people. But our reasoning lies in our passion for dancefloor tracks. Between the three of us it's quite likely that one of us will have some love for most drum & bass out there. However, when we go out to a rave we like to 'move' about, not fall asleep which is a state you might find yourself in at some, shall I say, more eclectic drum & bass events. The other meaning for 'movement' is that we hope bringing Waxworks to Hidden will be a start of bigger and better things to come for us and the scene in general.
Tell us more about what's happening at your Hidden first event...
Well, the first Hidden event will feature a line-up which we hope punters will love as much as we do! It's taken us ages to put this one together because there are just so many good combinations. Our nights aim to combine all the best bits of drum & bass and the different genres to create a something special that will both engage and excite. For example, Mutated Forms have just released a new varied album, DC Breaks have pretty much remixed everything in the last six months and Xample, well, goes without saying! Plus we have a few other little gems in Grafix from Nu Urban and Physical with the dubstep pressure.
You'll find that we have spent a lot of effort (and money!) on the second room and not just filled it with eager beaver drum & bass DJs with all due respect. Our nights are eclectic and although drum & bass is a massive passion of ours we love other styles too. JFB is guaranteed to make any self respecting urban music nut go weak at the knees and The Living Graham Bond, a fresh signing to Chew The Fat!, will be providing some bouncy fidget house flavours!
What are your plans for the future?
Our new website will be launched any day now and we're armed with a whole host of exclusive Waxworks mixes from big industry names that will be released monthly. There is also plans for a Movement Music digital-only label and booking agency this summer.
