Review: Suckerpunch at DQ, Sheffield

Tayo

A student DJ group quickly gaining support and admiration in the Steel City managed to coax Fabric resident DJ Tayo to the North for a spectacular night at Sheffield's most quirky and innovative venue: DQ.

Supported by fresh, Plump DJs-style breakbeat from Mr. Shanks, lifting, ethereal drum & bass from Timmy Dutch and old-school funk and breaks from Andy H, Tayo's set was an exhibition in bass music. Playing 'breaks with a bit of bounce', the DQ faithful were treated to some of the influences and tunes that have made Tayo the top-dog of the so-called 'nu-breaks' scene. A hint of classic reggae (Toots & the Maytals anyone?), some sort of DJ Marky samba-style drum & bass and even a touch of jungle combined to create a very flavoursome yet tastefully understated set. A little bit of skank, some dub and even some eighties funk. It all felt very South London, in touch with its roots but still pushing boundaries: retro Adidas mixed with cans of Red Stripe...

The Head of the Breaks Mob, Tayo represents one of many who will be appearing at this venue under the Suckerpunch wing in the immediate future. Always guaranteeing a quality night, Suckerpunch are marked out by a versatile and thoughtful core of DJ's and producers, who are equally at home with cutting-edge contemporary electro as they are with soulful, mature dub. Suckerpunch is gathering quite a reputation in Sheffield, and if any city in England knows its electronic music, it's the capital of the People's Republic of South Yorkshire. Sheffield-style to the core. Go along – you won't be disappointed.
