Drum & bass event Spectrum has been running in Dublin since February, promoters The Turntable Terrorwrist Crew tell us all about it...
Please introduce yourself...
How's it goin'? Spectrum Cru here touching base all the way live from Dublin Town, we've been running our night Spectrum for just over nine months bringing the best liquid, deep and soulful international and Irish DJs to play for us here!
Where & when do your events take place?
After two venue changes Eoin Cregan from Bodytonic approached us about working with him and we finally settled in our spiritual home The Twisted Pepper in the heart of Dublin city centre! Our nights are usually bang in the middle of the month varying between the second and third week.
What are the names of the residents?
Four lifelong friends, two brothers and two mates, from Artane in Dublin make up our crew of The Turntable Terrorwrists: Nick Fury, Donny Wang, LP MasterWong and The Count.
What's the night all about?
Our aim with the night is to bring in the best new and exciting international talent and the cream of the Irish scene. We wanted to book the DJs we were really feeling whose tunes were staying in our boxes and destroying the dancefloor. So far we've had 0=0, Calibre, Alix Perez, Eveson, Random Movement, Quiff, Jubei and Seba. From the Irish scene Jet Li, Kodie, Synergy, Fraher, Gooky, Code, Polska, Executive Steve, Bad Operator, Craig C and Beatnik and not forgetting MCs Steo and Brez.
Best memories from a night?
Every night it just keeps getting better and better and it's great to see new faces at every new night along with the hardcore Irish junglists who turn up for every gig! Some highlights have to be Brian Jet Li taking a risk on us and letting us throw his record launch party for Jungle Republic Series 1 and getting Calibre to come play at our very first night; Mike Random telling us it was the best night of his tour since he arrived from America; Quiff absolutely destroying the place, we had never seen so many people inside the room, at one stage there was a bouncer on the door telling people one in one out! Bringing Paul Jubei out on the lash, top bloke, and 0=0 a surprise late addition to the Polska album launch and so very unique mind-blowing stuff with the Atari joystick!
Funniest thing to have happened at one of your events?
Has to be our September rave with Jubei, the club was an absolute roadblock that night as it was the first night back for all the colleges in Dublin and the line-up was outrageous with 2652, Surgeon and DJ Rush also on the bill! So at ten to one, ten minutes before he's due to go on Jubei decides he needs a smoke before going on stage. So we eventually get him outside the club, he has his smoke and we have to rush him upstairs to get him on. Two of us have to do a bouncer act all the way up the stairs pushing and shoving people out the way but we got him there just in time, looked Hollywood!
Who has played the best set at your club in the last six months?
Every DJ we've had play has murdered the place, we can't decide here between Random Movement, Quiff and Jubei.
What are your plans for the future?
To keep pushing Spectrum as far as we can take it, we've just received our dates for the next few months into next year so we're working on a few special back-to-backs in the new year. We've got our first birthday coming up in February which we're planning at the minute! As for the rest of this year we have Genotype and the Organic lads Alexander and Suspect coming over on November 26th, we're really looking forward to that one!
Anything else you'd like to tell us about?
We'd just like to thank a few people: Colm Synergy, the hardest working man in Irish drum & bass for all his help and spins during the year; Fraher for all the artwork and advice; Brian Jet Li for the album launch; Barry Ricky and Jay from Reach for taking a chance on Nick Fury, we possibly wouldn't be doing this if it wasn't for them Derek and Steve from Tribe; Ross, Rohan and Naphta from Bassbin; Code for the album launch; Ernie in Galway; Paul and Pat in Belfast; Skeletor and Beckett from irishdrumandbass.com; Eoin and all the lads in The Twisted Pepper; Conor from The Underground; Johnny Moy from The Good Bits and all Irish drum & bass supporters.
