Born out of the crumbled leaves of Autumn 2005, Break Thru began its journey as a cutting edge music event within Birmingham’s thriving underground music scene. With Metalheadz Easter Extravaganza as its first night, Break Thru Valve events and as home to Birmingham’s Soul:ution and Exit events, its reputation has developed a legendary status to West Midlands drum & bass lovers.
Saturday 21st January’s line-up with headliners Marcus Intalex, Dub Phizix and Strategy was an irresistible opportunity to catch the almighty Marka live, and as a lover of Intalex’s groove and soul sounds this night could not be missed.
Originally intrigued with Break Thru’s venue change and first use of the HMV Institute, as it’s not a venue I would typically associate with this event, it wasn’t long until I was proved wrong and reassured that this night was going be impressive. The vibe of the evening was instantly set on arrival into HMV’s Library, a separate entrance into the venue led down steps into the buzzing atmosphere that surrounded the dancefloor. An electric crowd, heavy sub sounds and energetic drum & bass vibes transformed this venue into a dark yet vibrant charismatic space, carrying a warehouse feel.
Promoter of Break Thru, Dan B (Blindside Records) & resident, Shakk's sets provided a perfect warm-up for the headliners with some lovely rollers and dark tech sounds, followed by Marcus Intalex fulfilling his reputation with a fine selection that kept everybody on their toes. It was a little surprising that Dub Phizix dropped Marka as the second track in his set, I had anticipated more suspense, however the room standardly went off with not one head still.
My favourite set of the night was from new resident, Skitty (Foundation X, Hardware, Metalheadz), who kept the room bouncing with Amens and killer breaks until the last minute with the wickedest jungle set I’ve heard for a while. The entire night consisted of positive energy, which made it difficult to leave the dance floor.
The next line up is looking to be just as big with dBridge & Need For Mirrors 18th February, and I’ve even heard David Rodigan is coming soon to Break Thru. Give me some signal!
