October 19th will see former drum & bass upstart turned bass music badman Redlight join up with San Francisco house don and Dirtybird co-founder Justin Martin for a mammoth 8 hour long set of bass-heavy beats. Taking place at London's warehouse-style Crucifix Lane venue, you can bet your eardrums that this one is going to go off in a big way.
In the early to mid-00s, DJ Clipz was a near-constant presence on the drum and bass circuit, providing a stream of bangers that many would consider defining tracks of the jump-up sub-genre. Towards the end of the decade, however, he began to feel disillusioned with what he perceived as the stagnation of the d n b scene and decided to reinvent himself with a new moniker and sound. That moniker was Redlight and that sound was a pretty much indefinable mix of house, hip hop, techno and jungle, one that has been blasting through airwaves and soundsystems ever since.
While Redlight was cutting his teeth with wobble-heavy d'n'b wrecking balls, Justin Martin was following a very different path to producer stardom. The electronic music community first became aware of his work in 2003, when he dropped debut single "The Sad Piano" to widespread critical acclaim.
Receiving support from the likes of Pete Tong and Derrick May, he built on that early success with a string of brilliant releases, firmly establishing himself as a key player in the house scene. 2012 has been a good year for Martin, with the release of his quite excellent Ghettos & Gardens LP (on the dirtybird label he helped to create) making serious waves in the house community and beyond.
It's always exciting when two DJs from different backgrounds go back to back and for that reason we are almost bursting at the seams with anticipation for this latest edition of the SideXSide series. Though the genesis of their careers couldn't be more different, the music that these two now make clearly has a lot in common, namely infectious hooks and rib-rattling basslines.
To find out more and to pick up tickets for what promises to be a more than special evening, go here. However, we have three pairs of tickets to give away and to enter the draw just enter this question: Who is the other co-founder of Dirtybird Records alongside Justin Martin?
