R.A.R.E.

R.A.R.E is a new night brought to you by Nerm & D-Code (Shiva Soundsystem) and Subterra & Dekko (Essence of Chi). They describe the night as "an amazing array of textured sound colliding deep dubstep and beautiful drum & bass." We spoke to Nerm to find out more and he also did an exclusive mix for us...

Please introduce yourself...
I'm Nerm from Shiva Soundsystem and sometimes from Radio 1. I help run a night called R.A.R.E which has been running from August, although Shiva Soundsystem has been doing events for the last ten years or so!

Where and when do your events take place?
Every couple of months at East Village in Shoreditch, London.

Who are the residents?
Me & D-Code, Subterra & Dekko.

What's the night all about?
The idea came about through doing my radio shows and putting the last label compilation together. I wanted a lot of different textures on there and it just so happened that Subterra (known for his D&B tracks on Frequency) was producing different, slower stuff, not dubstep and not hip hop. Just different and still well produced. So his stuff got my mind whirring. I wanted more amazing music, regardless of genre and yet, I wanted it to be danceable, not just wanky clicks and a pad (although I'm partial to a bit of that too!). And that's the aim of the night - to get deeper, different sounds on the dancefloor. That's why Blu Mar Ten and Oris Jay / Darqwan fit the bill as headliners for our next event on Thursday October 28th perfectly!

How would you describe your crowd?
Strangely young! I expected a load of late 20-30 year olds that would be into the more musical side of things to come, have a beer, nod and stroke chins but we have a great mixed crowd.

Who's played the best set at your club in the last six months?
Without sounding biased Subterra kills it for me. His stuff outside of "normal" drum & bass is wicked and I reckon he's gonna blow up. Reminds me of Massive Attack, Flying Lotus and Leftfield but able to switch those feelings to a DnB tempo.

What are your plans for the future?
More radio and bit of TV, music and nights! The same really, though there are a couple of big things coming up that are pretty different...

Such as?
Well, D-Code's finished working on DJ Hero 2 and has a track that he did with Sparfunk from Ram Records on the game. He's also in the lab on his band project which is sounding incredible!

I'm working on the music for a film from the director of Kidulthood that's due out in Spring 2011 called "Everywhere and Nowhere". The lead character is a DJ and the scenes in the club where he's mixing, well that's me in the mix! It's been interesting mixing for film and planning drops to a visual cue was well weird!

And, of course, there's our annual tour to India and this year we're really pushing the boundaries. We're taking the first ever UK dubstep act out to India with us: Caspa!
