Promoter Profile: Rupture

Double O

In the last three years, Rupture has grown into one of the UK's most respected underground drum & bass/dubstep nights. The line-up for their next event on Friday 19th February shows exactly why - featuring headliners Optical & Matrix going deep with a special b2b 'Prototype Years' set alongside upfront and raw beats from the likes of Icicle, Skitty and Heny G.

Built around strong residents and the dedicated vision of promoters Double O (pictured) & Mantra, Rupture joins the dots between past, present and future. Previous guests have included old-school dons like Storm and Equinox, as well as forward-thinkers like Instra:mental and June Miller plus dub veteran Aba Shanti-I. We caught up with Mantra to find out more:

With two rooms and a diverse music policy, it's clear that Rupture is more than just a regular D&B night - but what makes a 'Rupture' night special in your opinion?
A lot of the D&B that we play and that gets played at Rupture doesn't at other nights. There's a real old skool feel to Rupture, where it's just pure music lovers and no pretentious people.  So much hard work goes into Rupture so when it comes around you won’t find us standing by the bar or door, we're right in the middle of the crowd brocking out hard and I think that passion shows! The venue is also amazing and has an incredible soundsystem.

Who are your residents and why have you chosen them?
Myself and Double-O, Bekah for her heavy steppers selection, Equinox for his selection and energy as a DJ, Hades for his ruffige sounds, don't let Panka's exterior fool you, she comes with some ruffneck sounds! Threshold for his dubwise selection and Theory, who plays totally across the board from mellow to tear-out.

For your first few events, you moved around a few different venues before finding a home at Corsica Studios.  Why did you choose to settle here?

Corsica Studios is the perfect space for Rupture. It has an amazing warehouse feel, reasonably priced drinks, great staff and above all the Funktion One sound system is incredible.  It has all the ingredients to create an amazing atmosphere.

Rupture always seems to draw a crowd from across the country, with regular contingents coming from the Midlands and even further afield.  Why do you think this is?
We've had people come from as far as Wales by themselves and leave knowing half the club!  It's such a friendly crowd and the people are so dedicated to the music. Also we have a really solid online community through our radio shows where people tune from all over the place every week, so we’ve even had people flying over from America!

What's next for Rupture in 2010?
We have our first party of the year next week Friday February 19th, after that we'll start to make plans on our next one which will be something a bit different.  We've also been planning a label too and will launch that in 2010. Much love to all the supporters!
