Please introduce yourself...
My name is Anthony Peña (aka Peña) from Philadelphia, PA. I am the event director / promoter for New Junglist Massive and I put on a night called Droppin Science. I am also thoroughly involved with and promote for The Konkrete Jungle Organization, Philly Chapter and Head of Promotions for Fundamentals of House, one of the city's premier house music crews. I love to breakdance and like to mix records and produce in my spare time. Be on the lookout for my forthcoming releases!
Why did you decide to start Droppin Science?
Droppin' Science ran successfully for six months as a weekly by my friend SourDiesel and I two years ago. However, it was brought to my attention that there was a desire to expand, both in talent and venue space. After a year and a half of hitting the drawing boards, research and a lot of consideration, I knew that I had to fully develop D.S. into an event that would frontier the North American jungle drum & bass scene in the 21st century, right in the heart of Philadelphia.
Where and when do your events take place?
Droppin' Science takes place at The Arts Garage every last Friday of the month. The Arts Garage is one of Philly's premier progressive performance live-art, entertainment, and nightlife venues, that has a great awareness for its surrounding community. The venue has two floors of indoor and outdoor performance space, complete with restaurant / wi-fi café, two bars, and even a outdoor deck seating area.
What are the names of the residents?
Corey B, B-Rilla, Contact High, Dub-C + MC Ixia.
What's the night all about?
I wanted to provide an event that would be intelligent, intimate and mature but still offered familiar local talent coupled with the freshest, rawest dubs by A-list talent. I also wanted to offer a place where all sorts of enthusiasts can congregate, be a part of the drum & bass scene thriving in North America. The atmosphere is very social and uplifting, allowing everyone to gather, relax, and absorb the music. The D.S. environment is a collective of free-flowing good vibes.
On a more political tip, Droppin Science focuses on showcasing DJs / producers who are exceptional and influential, instead of just filling time slots. We know there is a need for this type of forward thinking and we are poised to deliver.
We also like to have the most thorough quality of sound, which is why I have Nobi from Dubstep Mafia reinforce the acoustics. I think it's important to spread these sounds to as many listeners as possible. That is also why Katie (DJ Miss Behave) will be at each event broadcasting live radio through DnBtv.com. Whether you're just dabbling in the drum & bass scene, or you're a passionate junglist, there will be sounds all night that will positively melt your body and stir your soul!
How would you describe your crowd?
The crowd is composed of a diverse community of mature individuals who share a common taste for quality drum & bass. The DJs keep the crowd at a high energy level, yet there is still a relaxing, laid back vibe to the event. Most of the attendees are highly expressive of their support for the progression of this music in Philadelphia. And, of course, the crowd is always actively gettin' down to the sounds, with support of B-Boy B_ill on the ground.
What are your plans for the future?
First things first, I would like to devote most of my focus in to making each event memorable for everyone. As well as a live radio broadcast, I am planning on live video coverage for each event, starting April 30th with the exclusive first Philly appearance by Submorphics!
I am also working on plans to start a monthly New Junglist Massive Podcast discussing the upcoming events, with exclusive interviews and mixes. I work with and occasionally I am back and forth to Venezuela, so look out for Droppin' Science in South America!
Then after I help add to the growing jungle scene in Philly, I would definitely like to bring it to Miami, but also the West Coast and internationally. Taking the New Junglist Massive to new heights and putting Philadelphia on the map as a hotspot for the DnB music scene.
Anything else you'd like to tell us about?
All this wouldn't be possible without the extra help, insight, love and guidance from Teri, SourDiesel, Ixia, Nobie, Ninja K, Ola, Ryan Hickey, Mandie, Kononchuk, Matty G, Sarh, DJ Pos, Bryan Stout, Al Tommy, DZA, Jeff Omega, D-Tech, DJ Self, Carl Matthes with Bassdrive.com, DJ Ghost, MC High IQ, Ross D, Will Miles, Submorphics, Seraph, Jason Magin and Dickbagel.
