On Friday April 27th Kmag Presents a Blue Cheese label night at Café 1001. In anticipation of this event we caught up with label co-owner Freek, who has also put together an exclusive mix to whet your appetite...
Please introduce yourself and Blue Cheese Records...
I'm DJ Freek, I co-own Blue Cheese along with fellow producer/DJ Bluey. The idea behind Blue Cheese is to push music from new artists who are trying to break through into the scene. We don't confine ourselves to a single sub-genre as we prefer to concentrate on the artists and helping them craft their "signature" sounds. This can range from the most minimal deep, to the hardest thumping techstep.
We also have the sister label Rotten Cheese Records which focuses on the jump-up side of dnb. Rotten Cheese is managed by the label's very own Richie Stix who is definitely making a name for himself as both a producer and a DJ. As a label we are privileged to receive amazing support from some of the scene's biggest players such as DJ Hazard, Mutated Forms, S.P.Y and many more...
Your night with us at Cafe 1001 is billed as The Lighter Side Of Blue Cheese... is this a new direction for the label?
During March we had a series of Blue Cheese club nights and radio shows and these were focussed more on the heavier side of the label, promoting one of our jump-up releases. So we're very excited to showcase the complete opposite end of the spectrum and play sets that we haven't been able to play at any of our previous nights. It's not really a new direction for the label, we've always had a lighter side, it's just always been overshadowed by our intent to destroy dancefloors with techy bangers.
Tell us about everyone on the line-up for the April 27th date at Cafe 1001 and what people can expect from their sets...
Label owners myself and Bluey will be doing a three deck B2B liquid / deep set. Blue Cheese artists on the night are Teksteppa, SoveX and John Miszt who will be performing a live set using a combination of hardware controllers, Ableton live and CDJs to provide a wonderfully unique set. Opening the show for us is the very talented DJ Oversight.
Where else can people see you DJ in the near future?
We don't have any label nights arranged as we have had quite a few over the past months and we're now all working hard on the beats for the next instalment on Blue Cheese. however, you can catch me in room three for Shabba's Birthday Bash @ The Scala on 5th May. To book me, Freek, for your event email firstname.lastname@example.org at Evolution Artist Management.
Anything else you want to tell us about?
The Intervention - Blue Edition, is out on May 7th and features tunes from Teksteppa, SoveX & John Miszt. It really is an excellent representation of what the label is all about and is receiving great support from within the scene.
I've also done a guest mix along for all the Kmag readers really to say thanks for all the continued support we've been receiving over the last 12 months.
Id like to give a shout out to Callide, Lewis & everyone at Cygnus Music for doing an excellent job, John Sutherland our mastering engineer who always provides a quality service, and shouts to all the Blue Cheese, Rotten Cheese, UKDNB, EAM, Lost In Bass & The Sik Mix crews...
