DJ SW@T

Each month we profile an up-and-coming DJ worthy of your attention. DJ SW@T from Canada DJs, produces, promote her own event and somehow still finds the time to work on a short film about the Canadian drum and bass scene...

Please introduce yourself briefly...
My name is Dar a.k.a DJ SW@T from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. I got into DJing in late 2005. My interest for it came in when I was hanging out with some of my guy friends that were playing records. When I asked them if I could play they said," No, too technical for you." Stubborn me did not want to listen to them. I went out and bought my own turntables a couple weeks later and the rest is history.

Tell us about your residencies...
I've had residencies at local club nights, Extra Strength Saturday, Solution Sundays, Re-Fresh Thursdays that were drum & bass, and jungle nights. As well as started up a couple of my own nights like Lo-Rev which was a liquid drum & bass lounge and Hi-Rev a more upbeat drum & bass biweekly. Nowadays I'm running the only dubstep night in my home town, Dubstep Sessions.

Have you got into production yet?
Yes, I have been in production for about 10 months now. I've got a release on Foul Play Record's album "Payin' Dues". I've got many more tunes in the works and I am collaborating with other artists and singers.

What's the next challenge for you?
I am working on a short film / documentary on the drum & bass, jungle and dubstep scene in Canada. When you think of these genres you think of countries like the UK / Europe and how huge their scene is. I want to show the rest of the world what our scene looks like and what our Canadian artists and promoters are doing out here to keep things moving.

Anything else you’d like to tell us about?
I'm also showcasing the women of drum & bass and dubstep in our scene. Focusing on our Canadian talent, I am promoting all of the wonderfully talent producers, DJs, singers and MCs of our female drum & bass scene. Facing different challenges in this male dominated scene we are often overlooked or pre-judged. This way we are now working together to really push our sound and our many musical talents.
