Different Drumz, the fast rising online radio station, is home to a number of producers and DJs, including Macca and Presents. They've also hosted a number of acclaimed events, and are adding to that number on November 30th, at Brixton's Plan B basement. We spoke to DJ Nitro from the station about the event, the latest station podcast, and DDz's plans for continued growth.
Hey Nitro, how are you? We're talking Different Drumz, so give us a little background on the station and its activities.
Hi, yeah I’m great thanks. Different Drumz is my 'baby' so to speak…It was setup by myself and a couple of other friends around 4 years ago and started as just a monthly drum & bass event in South London and very quickly evolved into a 24/7 online radio station with all the trimmings.
As a DJ that has played on plenty of other online drum & bass stations I had noticed (in most cases) that there was always various elements that I felt could be done better - be it the DJ selection, music styles being played, website & features or whatever, so I felt it was time to create a station of my own so I could take all of the best elements I had seen and do it ‘properly' or at least to the best of my ability.
The main aim of the station was to provide a place where everyone and anyone can get together and share the love for quality drum and bass specialising in liquid, deep and rolling d&b. Our method when it comes to artists, live shows and events is 'quality not quantity' and for us it’s all about the love!
You're taking over Plan B again at the end of November - what's happening with this event?
We really can't wait for this event, it’s another chance for us to showcase some top artists and rising stars in the scene and just have a great night of quality drum & bass and meet others that love d&b as much as we do.
How did you come up with the line up? What do you expect the vibe to be like on the 30th?
Well, we always try to choose artists that we respect as producers and/or DJs so we usually choose artists that we find ourselves playing their tunes a lot during our shows and mixes or that we would just love to meet and work with. It’s also a great chance to let people know that drum & bass is not always about wobbly jump up bizzle but can be soulful, melodic, beautiful music that anyone can appreciate even if they have never heard drum & bass before.
There is always a really great vibe at our events and everyone is smiling and having fun, there’s never any trouble and we like to think our events are different from most other d&b events for that reason.. remember it’s all about the love!
And you've got a new podcast to promote as well? It's a beautiful listen, how did it come about?
Well this was just perfect timing really as not only was it a chance for us to give people a little teaser of what they can expect at the event but to showcase the brilliance that is Hybrid Minds and give them a chance to show our listeners/visitors what they are all about as producers and promote various forthcoming tracks of theirs and some tracks from their recently released EP. We also have more podcast mixes and interviews due to drop soon from names like Technicolour, LSB & more so watch this space...
Tell us about some of the range other things that the station is up to. Do you have any other events lined up?
As ever we have oodles going on at Different Drumz at the moment including new artists joining the team, new weekly radio shows, plenty of new mixes up in our downloads area that’s updated regularly (we have hundreds of d&b sets for free download now), the podcast series that is doing amazingly well and getting a lot of attention and of course our events too.
We have another event lined up for January next year at Plan B again but I’m afraid I can’t give too much away at the moment but I can assure you at will be yet another great night with great artists and a great vibe... standard!
