Badman Ting is an old skool jungle event based in Manchester owned by Mike Pollitt (aka Nanny Banton) and Phil McDonnell (aka Phil The Tank). Mike explains what they're all about.
Where and when do your events take place?
The night takes place at Moho Live on Tibb Street in the middle of Manchester's Northern Quarter district, so there are plenty of pre-bars to sample before you get down. We currently don't have a regular weekend of the month for the night, we try to work our events around the dates the DJs we want are available.
Who are the residents?
My DJ name is Nanny Banton and I've been a regular on the Manchester scene for quite some time. I've played at the city's biggest nights as well as guesting at jungle nights around the country and holding down residencies at nights such as Crash. Phil The Tank is also resident at the West Yorkshire based night Depthcuts where he spins a heavy selection of dnb rollers. He also had the pleasure of playing at the Helter Skelter raves many moons ago.
What's the night all about?
The idea behind the night was provide Manchester with a night dedicated to pre 2000 dnb and jungle. We also set out on a mission to try and bring some of the biggest names in the genre back to the clubs and show people that Manchester has more to offer club-wise than The Warehouse Project.
How would you describe your crowd?
The crowd is great mixture of friendly and enthusiastic people who are there for the music. None of this standing around looking cool business, people are there for a rave up. Age range seems to be very varied with the night drawing in retired junglists, local heads, free party regulars and students creating a really nice trouble free atmosphere.
Who's played the best set at your club in the last six months?
Over the past two events we have had Kenny Ken, Doc Scott, Ray Keith, Randall and Remarc as headliners. All of them have been absolute killer sets and we have been really happy that none of them have played a load of obvious generic jungle anthems but have educated the crowd. Personally I'd say the best was Randall who did a '94-'98 AWOL set and played a lot of stuff I'd never heard before.
Tell us all about your next night...
The next night is looking like another big one. On October 14th we have Mampi Swift playing a turn of the century set and Bizzy B, Devious D and Rick O Chet playing jungle sets with MC Fearless hosting. We have all this along with the residents and a mash-up of all things hip hop, dubstep and garage in the back room.
What are your plans for the future?
To just keep plugging away at what we are doing. The night just seems to be going from strength to strength being named as one of the top five new nights in The Guardian club guide and we hope to continue providing the line-ups Manchester deserves. Word seems to spreading fast and I know that for our last event we had people travel from all over the country, so we must be doing something right. As far as music policy goes, eventually we are gonna run out of headliners and it will interesting to see how the night evolves but for the time being it's pre 2000 dnb and jungle all the way.
Anything else you'd like to tell us about?
Just like to say thanks to everyone who has been involved in the night so far, from the DJs to all those behinds the scenes who have helped out purely for the love of the music. If you're into your jungle and early DNB this night is something you really must check out. It's London line-ups without the hassle.
