The second annual Toronto Drum & Bass Awards competition and event is upon us! A controversial topic on the forums, this collaboration between a few of the largest promoters (Future Sound, Destiny & TorontoJungle.com) in the megacity is nevertheless set to showcase some incredible talent, and give a little recognition to the people keeping D&B alive here, both on and off stage.
Categories including; Best Venue, Best Club Night, Best Radio Program, Best Promoter, Best Photographer, and a number of Best DJ / Producer, MC, Male & Female, Breakthrough & Legend, plus a few more are poised to give a fairly accurate overview of the D&B community in Toronto.
Most of the controversy mentioned above stems from the nominations (or a lack thereof), with people feeling left-out or misrepresented. Another issue drawing discussion is the awards show event itself. Though awards will be handed out, some of the winning DJs won't be playing, and the actual 'Headliner' for the event is an out-of-towner.
I'll be the first to admit, having been nominated but not taking home any trophies last year, the event was still a huge and positive success. It brought a lot of attention to the scene here, provided some much deserved exposure to people working hard at their craft, and was generally an amazing night of D&B on the town.
Whether you're involved or not, agree or disagree with the concept, can't wait for or care less about the event , the promotion team has done a lot of work to keep things transparent and make some noise surrounding Canada's largest D&B community this year. In my eyes this is all good, even the controversy.
Maybe I'm biased because of dual nominations (Best Breakthrough DJ & Best Radio Program), and excitement about the jam (I party well), but it's up to you and the audiences of Toronto to get involved from this point, and help shape our scene for the future.
The official site is online and taking votes until at least Monday, October 5. The awards show itself is taking place on the following Sunday, October 11.
