Q&A
What brought you to making drum'n'bass?
Locked: I was messing around with Cakewalk, experimenting and making crappy house beats. When I was about 16 I snuck into my first DnB party, a Peterborough local "Cousin L" was layin down some serious ragga vibes... I was blown away. The next day my crappy house turned in to crappy Amens and it's been a struggle ever since.
Erbalist: I started as a DJ in the 90s to some success, but quickly realized that I wanted to take things a lot further on an international scale. I came to the conclusion that making my own tunes was the next step forward... and down the rabbit hole I plunged!!!
Describe your music, does it fit within conventional genres?
We make jump up... Trying to do it as clean as possible and as big as possible, using a lot of fresh vocals and original synth work. Bottom line is we make tunes that we would want to hear when we go out.
What keeps your ideas fresh in the studio?
We have both been on a punk-rock / metal tip lately, it really comes through in our structure and the change-ups in our tracks... Trying to bring over the "intro, chorus, verse, chorus" instead of the classic jump-up loop is something we pay attention to. Getting drunk and playing with the Virus helps.
What kind of rig are you running?
We are running a software setup with a Powercore shoved in for good measure. As for programs, we run Cubase 5 and pretty much stick to the Powercore Virus and the Kontact sampler. Our favourite piece of equipment has to be the Dynaudio BM6A Studio Monitors... CHANGED OUR FUCKING LIVES!!!
How much time do you spend in the studio?
It can be hard to find time, but we usually get down to business about twice a week.
What is your approach to DJing & live performances?
Our objective is to make people dance and while playing a clean, solid set... once that is done, we get drunk and party.
First 'big' break in Canada?
Locked: Having my track Good Acid released on Capital J's VIP Dubz label. It was definitely when people started taking me serious.
Erbalist: Had a Kit Kat this morning... But seriously it's just a slow procedure, but it seems to be picking up speed now that were getting playlisted by some of the world's top DnB DJs.
Side projects we should look out for?
We don't have anything going on... But these jerks "Mocked & Gerbalist" are really hacking our sound on the bootlegs.
Give us a top 5...
Locked: My top 5 eh?
Erbalist: I don't like anything, so here's the top five things I don't like...
How do you feel about Canada's Drum'n'Bass scene currently?
Currently it feels like the scene has had a gust of wind under its wings. People like DCS905, CCDNB, Sound Solution, and many others are pushing Canadian DNB on an international level. It seems like Toronto has shifted back from a "party" scene into a "music" scene. Of course the downside here in Toronto is we're all "jaded haters" (if that statement bothered you... you're one of us). All kidding aside, Canadian DnB is lookin' pretty good these days... And we're glad to be a part of it.
