Canadian Content - it's an ongoing issue for discussion here in Canada. Our country has a number of legislations regarding its use for public broadcast, commercial or otherwise. Typically, it's a 35% minimum requirement that Canadian produced content be used for every hour of broadcast. Outside the studio, D&B/rave performances and club nights (especially those featuring out of town performers) don't adhere to the rule: When is the last time a fed asked for your playlist from Saturday's 3am mash-up?! Regardless, there are arguments for and against; it remains a heated debate in the Canadian music industry.
DJ Kapulet (pictured), a resident DJ for one of Ontario's busiest promoters (General Misconduct Entertainment) and increasingly busy DJ on the local circuit, has started a podcast and blog site to answer the devils advocates saying 'CanCon' shouldn't be policed on the airwaves or at all. By featuring music, interviews, DJs and MCs from all across the expansive country of Canada in semi-regular installments, Kapulet has created the CCDNB Podcast to truly let Canadian drum & bass music stand on its own.
Nine episodes in, he's featured artists like Mutt, NC-17 & Lexx, spoken to Furious Records, and has had Toronto based D&B DJ / blogger Jocelyn Dee in for news segments. Expect loads more fresh content to come as Canadian D&B artists continue to make themselves known and are discovered all the time, while those who've established themselves on a global scale surely aren't slowing down. Canadian Content, especially in the many realms and genres of drum & bass, is here to stay. We don't need rules to back it.
Speaking with Kapulet, we got the following heads up on CCDNB #10, and the other projects he's got in the pipeline: "I'll be putting the focus on the Canadian ragga-jungle scene this time around, I've found it to be some of the most popular D&B coming out of the country over the last couple years, and our listeners are often more responsive to the ragga. I like to keep things interactive, so this should stir some good discussion."
He also mentioned that they'll be speaking with label boss Chili Banks from Toronto label Junglist Manifesto about their 40+ deep catalog and upcoming release schedule: "Expect some fresh material from artists: Krinjah, RCola, 16 Armed Jack, Marcus Visionary, DJ K, KGB Kid, and more... CCDNB#10 is coming soon!"
