Canada's drum 'n' bass scene grew exponentially throughout 2009, in keeping with the rest of the world. Being spread across countless kilometers, any city can become a hotspot for urban music and culture. We take a quick look ahead at some goings-on in the Canadian jungle / DnB landscape for 2010.
PODCAST PROJECTS: The best way to see what our country has to offer aside from hitting events coast to coast is checking out the regular podcasts featuring cross-sections of our scene. Providing exceptionally in-depth, current and audibly stimulating rides through Canada's jungle/dnb panorama, free MP3 downloads are always something to bookmark. I suggest: CCDNB, Killa Records and DBE.
TORONTO TECH: Over the next year it would seem that a number of Toronto based producers that typically work on the techier side of the spectrum will be putting out a number of heavy-hitting releases, solidifying Toronto's prominent spot on the global DnB stage. Artists like Catacomb, NC-17, Eleventh Sun, Gremlinz and myself, Dubcomm, are all putting a lot of hours into our respective studios with efforts that will be available soon...
CANADIAN DNB LABELS: The labels have not been slacking off on the hills either; a number of Canadian music outlets will be continuing their efforts into releasing DnB music of all styles and flavours. On Point, Junglist Manifesto, Stride Recordings, Vinyl Syndicate, VIP Dubs, Furious Records, Killa Records... The list goes on...
CANADIAN BLOGOSPHERE: More and more people are getting involved and blogging about Canada's DnB scene... Over the past year a number of new sites have popped up, exposing all different corners of this great country's music community, some of my bookmarks include: Baceblog, Plugged Not Thugged, Teknopusher, Marcus Visionary, Toronto Jungle Tapes and /endrant. Check them out, follow some links, and learn a bit more about the community from a first person perspective.
As you can see, there is a lot happening up here, and this is truly just the tip of my biased iceberg. In trying to take a quick glance at the drum 'n' bass scene in Canada for the coming year, yes, people were overlooked, and yes, the article is somewhat Toronto. Well, I'm in Toronto. I'll be covering a huge range of stuff from all over the country this year, so drop a line and let me know what the next big thing is!
