Sean Scully, one of the leading abstract painters working today, is the subject of a new exhibition at Leeds Art Gallery. Taking place from May 26th to August 8th, the exhibition explores Scully's work from the 1980s, a period of the artist's career has not been reflected in gallery exhibitions, along with works on paper provided by the artist from his private collection.

Scully cultivates dimension and expression by re-introducing colour, space, and texture to minimalist works through the application of multiple layers of paint. Relief-like elements lend his work a physical and emphatic quality, as stripes widen and pulsate, colour is intensified, and harmony balances on the edge of collapse.
